The Health Equity Advancement Lab (HEAL) at the Dornsife School of Public Health at Drexel University was founded in 2018 by Dr. Alexis Roth. People and projects affiliated with HEAL use community-engaged research methods to understand how individual and social factors impact drug use, sexual health, and access to health care. We use this information to support the creation, implementation, and dissemination of evidence-based behavioral and structural interventions that improve the well-being of vulnerable and marginalized groups. While based in Philadelphia, the challenges our communities face and the interventions we co-design to address these challenges are applicable globally in urban environments. Priority populations in our current projects involve women engaging in survival sex, and persons affected by the opioid crisis including persons in active addiction, those in recovery, and lay persons responding to overdose, communities of color and adolescents,.
Our work is currently funded through grants from Drexel University, the American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. Our research partners include the City of Philadelphia AIDS Activities Coordinating Office and Division of STD Control, Prevention Point Philadelphia, Project SAFE, and the Louisiana Office of Behavioral Health. As part of our mission, we work hard to disseminate educational materials and study findings to community organizations serving our priority populations. To access our free educational materials, click here, or to access a list of our recent publications, click here.
Finally, as an applied health science lab, HEAL provides research opportunities to doctoral candidates, masters students, and undergraduate interns. A majority of our students are affiliated with the educational programs in the Dornsife School of Public Health at Drexel University.
